Just when I thought I'd got my head around CS:GO, with its $2000 weapon skins and Darude sound pack, this happens. It's the gift that keeps on giving, isn't it?According to the data, your chances of getting anything other than Mil-Spec items are remarkably low. In-fact, you'll only receive an item of Restricted (purple) rarity or better in one out of every five to six case openings. Of those five to six case openings, the one where you do get lucky is much more likely to provide you with a Restricted item than anything else, as Classified items have roughly a 3.2% drop rate, and Covert sits at around 0.64%.The R8 costs a mere $850 and a body shot will be enough to drop anyone, regardless of body armour. Presuming you can judge those lengthy trigger-pulls, that appears to be monstrous stopping power, but our best man is on the job so we'll have solid analysis for you soon.“As the scene grows, it’s an unfortunate reality that some individuals will seek opportunities to take advantage of their fans,” the statement says. “We will continue to take whatever action we think is necessary to protect the entertainment value created by professional Counter-Strike, including, on occasion, terminating our relationship with individuals who have demonstrated a willingness to exploit their fans’ faith in the integrity of the sport.”

Update: Valve and ESL have lifted the ban on the former ESC Gaming team, and reinstated its invitation to the Katowice 2015 offline qualifier. "The ex-ESC players were restricted from participating in Valve-sponsored events because their historical account activity matched allegations of misconduct," Valve said in a statement. "However, further investigation has clarified their role in the matter, and the restriction has been lifted."The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament at ESL One Katowice 2015 runs from March 12-15, and features a $250,000 prize pool. You may remember CS:GO's M4A4: Howl as one of the most expensive weapon skins available for the game. Today, Valve announced their receipt of a DMCA takedown notice, stating that both the skin and the Howling Dawn community sticker were not the original work of the item's Steam Workshop contributors. "This matter is extremely serious," Valve wrote in a post to the CS:GO community , "and we have taken appropriate action to resolve it."Over a decade later, people are still playing that game. Not just playing – it has evolved with time to become one of the most dominant eSports titles on the market today. Even though “Counter-Strike” has existed a long time, at UCLA this is the first year the game has had an official club standing on campus. Similar to the “Defense of the Ancients,” or “DotA,” group, the “Counter-Strike” club on campus is in its first year as an organization, fielding its own successful Collegiate StarLeague team.

"If you don't fill it out, you won't be getting a key," reads the post. Of course, Valve also states that active, current CS:GO players can expect to receive keys to gift to their friends through Steam. Digital clothing is a staple of video game economies–in fact, many multiplayer games essentially fund themselves by selling funny hats (looking at you Team Fortress 2). So when Bitcoin payment processor BitPay, Inc. partnered with OPSkins, a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) skins trading site, it seemed like a match made for business. It's not all just paint jobs and microtransactions, though. We're also seeing the return of the silenced variants for the M4A1 and the USP, which feature a smaller price tag and magazine size than their louder brethren. Valve has just rolled out a brand new patch for Counter-Strike: Global offensive, the first one of the new year, and the studio makes some pretty big changes to two of the most popular pistols – the P250 and the CZ75-Auto – not to mention a new case of weapon skins, including some stellar ones for the game's rare knives.Mortal Kombat X has a lot of different little fight modifiers that you can enable yourself in offline "kustom kombat" matches, or you can roll the dice and play "test your luck" matches online or off, which dial up a handful of random modifiers and drop you into a battle. There are a lot of these, including basic stuff like lowering the recovery time on uppercuts or giving you more meter. Some of them make the screen wobble around or force you to fight upside down. One time I got something called "kick dive," which reduces your entire move-set down to just the Kung Lao-style dive kick. But I only saw that one pop up once and it doesn't seem to be on the kustom kombat list, which shows the modifiers whether you've unlocked them or not. Weird. It's strange and a little disappointing that you can't cook up some mix of custom modifiers, save them, and use them against friends in online matches. Your only option online is to play the random, test your luck variant. It's also worth noting that the game is extremely in-your-face about its after-purchase options. There's a 25th character, Goro, that comes with some pre-order copies of the game, but if you don't have him already, his icon shows on the character select screen with "PRESS X TO PURCHASE GORO" showing up when you attempt to select him. Goro appears to be for sale for $5. There's also a large window on the main menu that cycles through the season pass characters and some skin options that are also for sale. While I think the "Cold Steel" Sub-Zero skin looks really cool, the game presents its DLC in a really gaudy way. On top of that, the game can give you daily faction challenges for characters that you don't own. And, to round things out, a handful of characters that don't appear as playable show up in the story, including Tanya, who is one of the four characters coming as part of the game's season pass. They'll even sell you packs of consumable "easy fatality" tokens, in case pausing the game, looking at the moves list, and executing the fatality properly is too much for you. Or maybe you'll just want to spend $20 to unlock everything from the game's "krypt" section. Mortal Kombat is one of the great, long-running franchises of gaming and its popularity is already well-documented. Packing it with various real money transactions and having the game try to upsell me in multiple spots cheapens the experience. The PC version of Mortal Kombat X launched in a literally unplayable state due to it attempting to use the same kind of "play part of the game while the rest downloads" technology that you've seen on modern consoles. This ended up ruining the first night of play, but I haven't had any issues with that end of the game since. The PC version of the game looks fantastic with everything turned up and is well-integrated with Steam for matchmaking purposes. The two console versions are roughly the same, with the most meaningful differences being your controller preference and where you have the most friends to play with. The PlayStation 4 version of the game supports PS3 fight sticks over USB, which is a nice touch if you fell on the Sony side last time around and have that hardware already. When I refer to flow, I refer to how the maps don't have any dead-ends. You can always get to one point of the map from another point without having to backtrack too much. The flow of the maps in CS always encourage the players to never backtrack. Basically, don't have any dead-ends. Simple rule. You can stream games directly from your PlayStation 4 or Xbox One game consoles, or on your PC using additional software. Region-locking, the act of making games non-functional if used outside particular parts of the world, is not an uncommon thing in games. It is, however, a big deal for Steam—especially the PC gaming service's trading/gifting market. With widespread region locks now in place, change seems inevitable.

Most CS:GO maps have a few really useful spots to drop a smoke grenade or flashbang. Often, these spots will require you to bounce the grenade off a wall, or perform some other trick to place the detonation precisely. There’s a ton of videos that will show you these spots, and show exactly how to throw your smoke grenade to get it to land there. Here’s a video showing the important smoke and flash spots for de_dust2, CS:GO’s most popular map. A quick Youtube search will find you similar videos for all the competitive maps. Once you know some of these, start up an offline practice match and start throwing some grenades around.CS:GO tips: Guide on how to get better at Counter-Strike: Global OffensiveThat’s set to change next month with a raft of Steam Machines hitting the market, but in the meantime Steam has released two peripherals: the Steam Controller and the Steam Link. The latter lets you play games on your TV via your gaming rig, but it’s the controller – with its haptic pads – I’ll be looking at in more detail here.“Resolution-wise, the gap has closed on a great many titles,” confirms Rich Leadbetter, a performance analysis specialist at Digital Foundry. “While disparities remain – Call of Duty Advanced Warfare for example – many of this year’s biggies like GTA 5, Destiny and Assassin’s Creed Unity are all very close indeed. They run at the same resolution on each machine with only minor differences separating them. Games that really push the CPU (as opposed to the graphics) are thin on the ground at the moment, there’s evidence here that Xbox One can actually pull ahead in some scenarios, as its eight cores run faster than their PS4 equivalents.

In addition that that meeting, Overkill has arranged to meet with many of Payday 2's top modders, and assigned 8 Overkill developers to actively engage with the community in the Steam forums, starting from next week. Many members of that community have been predictably vile in the comments underneath the statement, including several calls of "Fuck you Overkill", and at least one that asks the developers to kill themselves. The studio addressed the matter in a Reddit AMA a few weeks ago, explaining its decision to add microtransactions to the game after stating years ago that it wouldn't, but the anger hasn't gone away. Probably because those microtransactions are still in there, and haven't been changed in any big way.It was only three weeks ago when Peter Souvlis, one of the more veteran players in the Australian CS:GO scene, was streaming and playing matchmaking games with viewers. Souvlis has been doing this for a fair while, so it’s wasn’t too unusual for him to get messaged by strangers.
